This game is going to be 30 years old, still getting updates, and people will look back like "Remember when we didn’t even have the ability to open your own store, in a naturally built city, which expands as each user builds their own homes and businesses to support their own local economy?

The game currently has everything that was originally promised and much much more.

I’m not a fan. I played it for free with game pass on launch. It wasn’t for me, but I didn’t feel too let down. It fell short in many ways, but the core gameplay loop felt promising.

I then played it again about 3-4 years ago. I was wildly overwhelmed with how much was added. The game keeps expanding, and is clearly a passion project.

I’m not sure why you think that it doesn’t have as many features currently as originally promised.

The bigger problem is they lost the plot a couple years ago and the game isn’t as much fun as it used to be.

from what i can remember it’s at worst the same as it was at launch, my complaint is just that they’ve yet to make it more interesting.

like, the most fun i’ve had in the game is when starting out on a hot planet so i have to actually find shelter in a cave to not overheat, that was interesting.
Then i fix the ship and the game just becomes busywork…

A good rule of thumb to avoid an existential crisis is to think to yourself, what were you doing 9 years ago? I was barely 20 and moving out of my parents house and going out on my own for the first time. Seems like it just happened, but then i remember all the life I’ve lived since then and it starts to make a lot more sense.

Time always flies by in retrospect, but if you remember what you were actually doing back then it can help put things into perspective about how long ago it actually was. Like, people always say things like “Skyrim came out like 13 years ago? Where the hell did all the time go!” But then I remind myself that when Skyrim came out I was a freshman in highschool. Not only that, it was almost half my entire lifetime ago. Yeah, I’m old. But I’ve also lived a lot of my life since high school.

Anyway, this always helps me, so I hope it helps you. :)

A lot of times, when time feels like it went fast, is when you are trying to contextualize the time based on a limited scope of events. And since you only did stuff related to that scope a little bit within that time frame, it feels like it happened faster. So what you are doing there, is widening the scope to include more context.

Yeah i wonder if it’s a Stardew Valley type of situation where they just love adding to the game and the new one isn’t a priority.

I figure at this point NMS is mostly a testbed for Light no Fire’s features/mechanics. They get a big player base to test stuff and it builds good will from people getting free updates.

I wouldn’t play with settlements just yet - wait for the hotfix patch. I (and many others) have hit showstopping bugs both with current settlements and the new autophage settlements. e.g.

    • No Overseers office
    • Missing settlement terminals
    • Settlements with no inhabitants
    • Autophage settlements missing roofs and other structures
    • The new autophage items missing textures or looking low res
    • Settlement event countdown timers running out but does not complete or trigger new event
    • Cannot add materials to constructions projects
