Thought for sure McLaren made the wrong call there and Hamilton would fly by. But very impressed by Lando there. He earned that 2nd place. Hopefully they can keep this up.

I still maintain it was the wrong call. It only worked because Lando drove perfectly. If Lando made even the slightest mistake, he would have lost that position.

Expecting your driver to be prefect is not the right call.

Stella said on C4 that they intended to go for the hards because of the vsc, but the full safety changed things, however they didn’t have time to then get the soft tyres ready in the pits. Basically there was a higher chance of losing positions by the time lost switching to softs in the pit lane.

I thought it was fairly obvious that the vsc would turn full based on where the car stopped so that was still a small error on their part, but yeah, there’s always lots of things to take into account and it’s not always a simple x or y decision.

I was honestly a little confused when it turned out to be a VSC. I figured the way it was stopped on the straight there was no way Marshalls could retrieve it safely.

My comment even said safety car when I saw the car stopped, and I’d hit post before the virtual part came up

Great race from McLaren, surprising the pace they suddenly have here!

I feel for Piastri, would have loved for him to get his first podium here.

It’s crazy how Perez has fallen this year. Towards the beginning, I thought he might be able to fight with Verstappen for the Championship. Now I’m not sure if he will still have a seat at Red Bull next year.

In his favour is the fact that I’m not sure who they have to take his seat in the short term. Not sure either of the Alpha Tauri drivers would be promoted, and DeVries is fighting for the AT seat as it is. There’s Dan but I’m not sure he’d be promoted to the lead team. If he got a seat I think it’d be DeVries’ on a short term contract.

I think they had an option on Albon, so if the conditions of that transfer to Williams are still favourable to RB maybe they can bring him back, but not sure they would. They did back him on the year off and kept him on the grid though, so who knows.

We don’t have visibility of it but maybe there’s a wildcard in the group of drivers where they can poach a driver by them triggering a performance clause in their contact that allows a transfer to the front runner team.

There’s a few drivers outside F1 that get mentioned but it’d be a big showing of faith to pull one of those into the Redbull.

Given where we’re at, I think Perez might be in trouble for end of next season if he can’t turn it around. I assume the team would expect him to take 2nd in the drivers championship this year and anything less will put a stack of pressure on the seat. Right now I don’t think it’s a given he’ll take second. That said, he may be safe for the remainder of his current contract, through to end of next year, if there’s not a better proposition and Redbull is still winning.

Maybe they should bring Vettel back.

On Wefwef, it completely blocks the community and not just filter it from homepage. It just needs to be tweaked and get a filter for homepage, but it’s good that the option is there. I might just send a feedback on this feature.

Yes, he really had to wring out that podium step with some tough, but fair, defending while Hamilton killed his tyres. It’s good that he trusted the team and then bloody well made the strategy work. Great combination. Hamilton was lucky to be up there, anyway.

Great race overall, probably equally as good as the Austria Sprint.

McLaren was the headliner and Norris rightly got all the plaudits for an amazing drive, but it’s a shame more fuss hasn’t been raised about Piastri. He would most likely have had a podium if not for the unlucky safety car and continues to show that the hype was not unwarranted. It’s going to be very interesting to see what he can do in a car that can actually perform.

Aston continues to struggle, though this track was never going to be suited for them, and Stroll delivered a patented yo-yo performance by following up a solid showing in Austria by being very poor today. Alonso did what he could and displayed some great defensive positioning, but 7th was probably the best they could hope for here. Hungary should be a good track for Aston and so that’s when we’ll get a true measure of how far behind the pack they’ve fallen.

Shambolic race weekend by Ferrari, though their car seemed just awful here. Wasn’t fast enough on the medium and couldn’t get temps into the hards.

Not much to say about Red Bull, I feel like we’ve seen this race multiple times already this season from them. It was nice seeing Max at least briefly involved in battles, but otherwise it was another comfortable victory for him while Perez fucked his quali and executed an unremarkable bare-minimum recovery drive.

Shout-out to two drivers who will be forgotten this race. Gasly was doing really well until his car did an Alpine got Strolled, so it’s unfortunate he probably won’t get any credit, and finally a solid race by Sargent, but he didn’t get any points so I imagine nobody will have noticed.

EDIT: thanks eroc1990 for pointing out the contact with Stroll was harder than I caught live and so Stroll was probably more to blame than Alpine.

Was the contact that bad? I know they touched but it didn’t look forceful enough to break Gaslys suspension. I’ll look at it again.

It looked like it to me. The clip starts here on the race highlights. Once Stroll returns to within track limits, it looks like direct wheel to wheel with harder contact on the rear right, which seems to have been what caused the suspension to break. at ~6:43 they show the onboard from Gasly’s view and it was hard enough to jolt him, and only after Stroll made contact did the Alpine begin to crab.

          EDIT: Fixing grammar/caps.

I think you’re right but it just hurt to see Oscar around a second behind Lewis coming around the last corner. The Papayas we’re looking so good I cant imagine Oscar couldn’t have made that up in the last sprint. So happy for them regardless, however.

The timing of the stop is just as bad as the choice of compound, but you can’t really pre-plan for a VSC or an SC. Still, though, Oscar was super, super close in the final sector of the last lap. I’m sure Ham wasn’t pushing super hard because he just wanted to bring it home, but one or two more laps and I think Oscar could have sniped that last podium spot.

We went through this back in the day on r/Formula1, banning spoilers restricts the conversation.

I get that sometimes you’re not able to watch live, restrict the Formula1 content you consume during that time.

You can’t have the entire F1 community tiptoe around you because you’ve not watched the race.

Having said that, other race series should be spoiler-free in this community.

The fight with Hamilton showed that their car is doing great on top speed and high speed corners, but not low speed corners. I won’t be surprised if slower circuits will see them dropping back around front of midfield.

Really enjoyed that one. Great to see McLaren show pace like that again, makes you wonder what might have been possible if they were able to deliver this car at the start of the season. Really happy that Lando has been given a car worthy of his talent, hopefully it works well at other high-speed circuits. Also Max talking about praying Oscar didn’t understeer into him as they went side by side through Copse was hilarious.
