One time, when my friend and I were returning to her house, I was the first one to come in, except that I couldn’t because her very large dog was blocking the doorway and holding a bag in his mouth. Apparently he had been overcome by temptation while we were away and ate the bread in that bag. Now he was confessing and he didn’t get out of the way until his owner came, scolded him a little, and told him to go stay in his time-out corner.

My dog has been told off many times for stealing socks. He still does, but it’s just to bring them to me. It’s like he can’t stop himself, but he’s found a workaround. Go pull a yummy stinky sock out of a boot, enjoy it the whole way to me, place it at my feet and wait for a pat.

I’ve been folding washing and he’s pulled one out of the basket next to me and then placed it down at my feet.

My dog did the same, so I just taught him to bring me my socks in the morning. Either yesterdays socks lying on the floor or I’ll toss a new pair on the floor for him. When he gets excited for walks he’ll bring me socks. When I come home he brings me socks. When I take my socks off because it’s hot, he’ll bring them back… but at least he doesn’t chew them anymore. And he loves the little chore.
