Pretty much accepted fact now that if the recounts had actually been allowed then Gore would have won. US elections are awful. https://youtu.be/jucDFrO89Ko
Flic@mstdn.socialto politics @lemmy.world•The American Age Is Over - by Jonathan V. Last4·5 months ago@FilthyHookerSpit @Freshparsnip the thing I find weird is that not a single county flipped red to blue, but 88 flipped blue to red. Just demographic changes would usually mean one almost-blue changes hands. All one way hasn’t happened since Hoover, so you’d think, from that, that Trump had a MASSIVE margin.

Flic@mstdn.socialto politics @lemmy.world•Trump’s Trade War Risks Forfeiting America’s Economic Primacy4·6 months ago@Maiq @silence7 I still don’t get it. You’d think that even a Russian asset, as a malignant narcissistic demagogue, on becoming president of the largest economy in the world with the most powerful army, would just go ‘actually f*** you, I’m a bigger deal than you now, and your army and economy have both been ripped to shreds since I last got booted out anyway.’ Like, why’s he reducing the power/influence of the US and therefore his *own* power?!

But how long do you expect a car to last in the US? We have one car and it’s a 2012 reg that we bought secondhand in 2018…

Flic@mstdn.socialto politics @lemmy.world•Hundreds of international students wake up to an email asking them to self deport for campus activism101·6 months ago@Eheran @RaoulDook no. Didn’t get 50% of the vote. Only 1.7% margin vs Harris. 11th smallest margin ever (including 5 negative, eg 2016).
When he claims a landslide it’s because he wants to claim he has a mandate.
TBH the numbers are really weird. Getting that small a margin but winning every swing state is not likely. And every county that flipped, flipped one way to him, which hasn’t happened since Hoover. Again, on that margin that’s quite the feat.

Hopefully it is inviting people to dip their toe in the water, meet some fellow pissed off people, start organising, be visibly against what’s happening… It all matters.

And no, putting Pete Hegseth in charge doesn’t mean he’s suddenly captured the whole military. He hasn’t even managed to kick out any LGBTQ+ people yet.
Flic@mstdn.socialto politics @lemmy.world•Two-thirds of Americans now say they wouldn’t drive a Tesla — and most of them cite Elon Musk as the reason why, according to a new poll111·6 months ago@Boddhisatva @vividspecter there was massive voter suppression this election. It’s been mounting for ages but even worse this time. Loads of mail-ins chucked out; bomb threats; voter roll purges. A lot of people tried to vote (or even now, think they did) but were turned away or their votes weren’t counted. Even on those numbers, things look sticky for Trump. https://www.gregpalast.com/trump-lost-vote-suppression-won/
@boatswain @egrets same as firing staff only to use more expensive contractors to do the same job, or selling a building you own only to rent the same building from someone else. It doesn’t come from the same budget line, because it’s lower risk, in the sense that you could in theory just stop paying the money if your strategy/situation changes, and you won’t have ongoing expenses just from “owning” the thing. In reality you’re usually still locked in, just paying more.
