Well, this certainly explains Starfleet’s legendary opsec.
No one under 35 will understand the joke.
I’m under 35! First machine was a win98 XPS T450. 450Mhz!!!
I’m under 35 and I was playing Prince of Persia on DOS first (in 93-94). Being born in a second world country has its… benefits(?)
I understood most 80s cartoon references since we got them a decade late.
Guys? We found the exception!
Well then, as someone under 35 - can someone please explain?
The window displayed in the screen is the configuration dialog for the “Flying Through Space” screensaver in Windows 95: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RcLJJ5GOXg
Gets really good towards the end!
Thank you :)
When he’s right he’s right, I’m 34 and I don’t understand this reference at all.
At least there aren’t any flying toasters.
Wrong franchise ;-)
“What happened we dropped out of warp, report!”
“Sir, something moved the mouse”
It seems like we are trapped inside some kind of endless labyrinth!
“Commander, why is the main viewscreen only getting 21 FPS?”
“Sorry captain, I had the starfield set too high while we have a Chrome tab open.”
I hate to be THAT guy, but…. That’s not the helm. That is Ops!
Damn it, but thank you for being that guy, lol
I even questioned myself before submitting that title, did a quick google, and figured either that was the helm or both stations up front are collectively referred to as the helm.
The results that misled me…
…now I have to stealthily edit the title.
Yeah, there are various episodes that establish that different functions can be transferred to different bridge stations over the course of TNG.
I think when Data is piloting the ship from his old seat in PIC S3, that is what is happening, in universe.
This is amazing!
If you’re feeling nostalgic, grab the Win95 screensaver here, and plop it in C:\Windows\System32
https://archive.org/details/ssstars_201812
Works on Win 10 and 11. Still jitters exactly as expected heh.
Linux users have clones available
Aren’t screensavers executables? That’s some security nightmare if it still work on Win11.
It’s not like this particular screensaver can load data, so it cannot be made to do bad things with malformed data or something. The security nightmare is only about finding a trusted copy of the original 32 bit SCR file. (Not the 16 bit one, which also exists.)
Windows asks for admin approval before copying it into system32. So you probably can’t do this in a corporate environment.
Can’t wait til we see the Enterprise’s main view screen full of flying toasters.
I used to stare at that screensaver for so long as a teenager. And I wasn’t stoned.
Slow to fast, but what about Ramming Speed™?
This is literally how it works in Bridge Crew lol
And then the panel goes full BSoD while the view screen claims it needs to update drivers
Warp the fuck out LMFAO!!!
This is one of the best!
Data would totally use a bash shell.
Interestingly, bash shell was released 2 years after TNG came out.
But many years before it’s set. Checkmate!
Actually, that is a fun fact. I have no idea if I’ll ever use it but I feel happier knowing it.
fish, because he’s not basic.
zsh because he could actually figure out how to configure it.
Just FYI: saying “bash shell” is like saying “ATM machine”
What do you have against automated ATM machines?
?
Either this is a joke and I don’t get it or you don’t know what ATM means
It’s funny because it illustrates someone pedantic enough to point that out would also not get the joke.
Technically you are correct. It is like saying the Bourne again shell shell.
My attention was not to be pedantic, but informative. I hoped the “Just FYI” would carry that connotation instead of a pedantic one…
+ I’m literally autistic 💀
Im literally disabled.
That has nothing to do with anything.
