Imgur sells user data including age profiling and includes all the children in the data set. That’s what the UK ICO is threatening them with a fine for. I don’t have a problem with that fine.
They could have put a very very very simple filter on the user data they’re selling to advertisers, but they reacted by throwing their toys out of the pram.
Imgur are shitty. And they deleted a tranche of of stuff for people who don’t have a subscription. We know the process of enshittification, and we perpetuate it by not jumping ship whenever a big player starts. That time is now for imgur.
There are other image hosting platforms, and you can upload directly to your instance.
We actively encourage and enable enshittification when we stick with a big dominant player like imgur when they conspicuously start enshittification by deleting older content that doesn’t have a paid subscription and geoblocking countries that fine them for selling user area including users marked as age band children to advertisers. A simple filter would have done the trick. Geoblocking is actually harder to implement.
Other image host platforms exist and if we don’t jump ship when the larger ones enshittify, we’ll be left with no free image hosts and you’ll end up on your instance anyway.
At this point it’s not any worse or harder to just link to the original image, instead of rehosting on a corporation actively punishing its users for not having a paid subscriptions and punishing whole countries for sayng they shouldn’t sell the browsing habits of children to advertisers and other interested parties.
The way I see it, lemmy is filled with parasites, people who do not offer any monetary incentive to their participation in a for-profit website. ad blocking, anonymization, we are a net negative for Imgur. I can certainly understand choosing image hosts that can reach more lemmy users, but Imgur would almost certainly be happier if we moved elsewhere
Content not viewable in your region.
Imgur are corpocrap. Host on lemmy instead.
Why go to all this effort for a worse experience for other people?
This question is better directed at the UK govt.

Hosting content costs money. Particularly with scrapers as ubiquitous as they are. Saving your instance some money is helpful

Not OP, but I have been a filthy casual on Lemmy since the reddit api bs. I have no idea how to host an image on Lemmy and link it in a post.
There an image icon. It looks like two hills and a sun dot in a box. You click it.
That’s what I was missing - thanks! What are the masses using for an image host these days?
