If you’ve ever went to med school, you’ll know most people do medical research not for the love of research, but because it’s great to put on a resume. If thousands of med students and their mentors are only trying to get published for their resume, then the quality of the research is irrelevant for their purposes.

    Basically, capitalism is the problem.

It seems like this problem would persist anywhere where med students have preferences in where they want to be hired. If med students in a communist country know that they might be sent to work in a hospital in the middle of a corn field, or in a hospital in a trendy city near a beautiful beach, they will do everything they can to be placed in the latter.

Scarcity is a fact of life. Med students in capitalism are incentivised by survival. You need this job to live. Under a socialist system, you don’t need this job to live, so the pressure to compete is less. So the volume of junk research would be less.
