Well the good news is that it’s way less than half of humanity. Most of humanity consists of nice respectable people that sometimes have disagreements.
Then there is a sliver of criminals that steal your car, for example. These are assholes
Then there is a tiny sliver of narcissistic psychopathic people that steal everything, give back nothing, cause nothing but misery and death and then tell you it’s your fault. These are the scum of the earth and we should leave them with nothing so that they know how it is.
For many minorities there is a lot more than a sliver of humanity that hold very hateful views against them. Like, I’m not saying that most people are homophobic but it’s an awful damn lot.
I’m going to say like 95% of humanity. And I’m really talking worldwide, not just US. We have been made apathetic. The world would be better if the average person cared more.
I think a lot of it is overload from the Internet. Our brains are simply not designed to handle the unfathomably immense, endless torrent of information.
It happened on a much smaller scale before, the common trope of younger people being more idealistic and it generally fading away as the years go by. But now that progression is happening at hyper speed, and it’s getting faster daily.
This isn’t fuvking passive. This is actively cultivated by the fuckers who control the algorithms, because it makes it easier to turn us against our own interests so we can be exploited.
I am going to say 99% of the wealthy people in charge of media could care less about humanity. This creates an illusion that this is normal since all our media echoes their sentiments. The world would be a better place if they were not in charge.
the wealthy people in charge of media could not care less about humanity
I will remember that for when I write a formal piece. Thanks Grammar Nazi!
Grammar uber alles.
Sorry I’m sucking up all the Empathy… It will probably get better after I die.
Sorry I’m sucking up all the Empathy
Huh. I thought that was me. Do… do we have to fight now? Like Highlander? CAN THERE BE ONLY ONE?
Yeah but for empathy so you got it backwards.
Ill get the needle+thread+condoms.
Count me in
to be clear it doesn’t feel nearly that bad outside the anglosphere
Its called psychopathy
As bad as those are, no. This shit is worse.
To the ones upvoting this post: Do you, though?
I’ve politely asked people not to share blown up, screen-wide pictures on this site of my common phobia when it’s unrelated to the post and I’ve been straight up downvoted and insulted, being told I’m exaggerating and “defective”.
Phobias are not exaggerations, they can make people do shit because the reaction is visceral when unexpected. I get headaches and feel like shit after. One of my middle school teachers shared that she once almost jumped off a roof when she saw a cat behind her.
E: Aaaand downvotes. 😂 Practice what you preach.
Hang on a sec, what’s this “common phobia” you have? Fear of flowers? You just might want to stay off the internet and spend some quality time with a therapist - or in an asylum.
Oh yeah, it’s flowers, dude, would you believe it’s a common phobia listed everywhere as such? I may just intern myself over a phobia because that also makes a lot of sense. Jerk.
I might be a jerk, but I’m not a basket case freaking out over a drawing of a flower. Get help.
You’re graduating to an asshole who also doesn’t get sarcasm.
Phobias are by their nature irrational, some level of personal responsibility falls on you to protect yourself when going online.
Dafuck are you talking about?
Yes, and I practice that but that’s not universal and there are many instances where that doesn’t work.
And I’d argue: why are we including blown-up, close-up, screen-wide images to posts of interest about programming when the image is completely unrelated? Articles about Python are especially egregious.
I ask precisely because it’s out of my control.
Heres the thing: we don’t just know about your phobia. First im hearing of it. I still dont know for sure what it is. I can’t adapt to that.
And since phobias are definitionally irrational, i cant just logic it out. I literally can’t even try to accommodate you unless you ask and explain. If you can’t do that, i don’t think you can socialize.
And some of my irrational triggers aren’t bad things, i don’t ask people to accommodate them, because the world needs more of those things; i just cant with them. I handle it on my end.
Yes, unfortunately, you’re reading the consequence of me having already advocated for this sort of thing with people being less than friendly, and now me bitching about it and getting my ass handed to me.
Anyway, the only thing I’m asking for is not to include huge pictures of common phobias. You know, a small subset of animals and obvious themes like evil clowns in places where they don’t belong. So that’s three fair qualifiers:
- huge pictures
- super common things known to be phobias, as suffered by roughly 20% of the population
- put in places where they have no logical reason to be
This is a fair request, and I’m not asking for anything else. If you consider this scenario, I don’t think I’m asking for anything unreasonable. I can handle everything else.
Tell you what: I’ll be considerate if you try to get at the roots of it and figure out what drives it and how to maybe heal at least partway, maybe cope when i fuck up.
Or do you take offense at that?
I feel this way about artworks/memes depicting, real or drawn, infantilized and/or oversexualized women.
Though it’s not a phobia but a severe adversion to the material to a point it can ruin my day, it is my responsibility to block the stuff from my view. If it becomes overwhelming, I disappear from online spaces entirely until I’m ready to try again. That’s my responsibility to handle my emotions and how I react to things.
If a person has a phobia to spiders, can we logically get rid of all spiders? Of course not, same thing here. Block buttons are meant to be utilized.
A lot of the internet is just serving heaps of content in which no one asks if you want to see, before it shoves itself in your face. That’s the nature of scrolling vs intentional use.
People can be mean, I hope I’m not coming off mean here, I’m not trying to.

Yup, and now add to that the jumpscare, the heart racing with the palpitations, the strong headache, the mood change, and the subsequent stress. If it were just “oh, I’m just not going to think about this,” it’d be great, but there’s a visceral physical reaction on top of the emotional one that no doubt includes stress hormones. I’m entering fight-or-flight for a split second, and not an ethical dilemma.

This conversation always comes back to this every time I bring it up, which is why I included so many hyphenated adjectives trying to be specific. I’m saying, why are we including huge pictures that take up the entire screen when they aren’t necessary and contribute nothing to the post? Small images are fine and I can manage, but these are 1200x900 pixel images to give a rough estimate. I’ve been flashed with 1920x1080 pictures of a snake in videos about Python when it wasn’t necessary and was completely unrelated to the topic. I don’t have a button for that.
Here’s the last image I had to block from a post about Python to give you a better idea:
Warning: close-up of a snake that’s probably not even a python.
https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/d1038c9e-5089-4917-86c1-711b07fb39b4.jpeg
And yes, I do actively use uBlock Origin’s element picker on desktop but its behavior is not consistent and it doesn’t exist on mobile apps for Lemmy either. I have to maneuver around this in the most impractical way, exposing me to this for far longer than I’d like. If I could manage, I wouldn’t say anything for getting so much backlash, tbh.
People can be mean, I hope I’m not coming off mean here, I’m not trying to.
Same here! No worries. I hope I’m not coming off as angry in trying to express the frustration behind this. :)
I guess? At the same time I don’t want to live in a world where you can’t tell jokes on a stage or where a bunch of white North American kids are diving in to defend my brown ass from funny jokes about my race that I enjoy
The trend seems to be that being a bigot on stage, while saying you can’t say these things, while saying them, is a way to get mega popular and loads of money.
Now criticizing israel’s genocide, or saying the palestinians deserve to live, are the way to get the government, and organized minions, to destroy your life.
Western supremacy can only exist in the absence of humanity.
Monotheism is a mind-virus.
Do you even know any? 🤔 Trinitarians (so any Christians) are man-worshipping polytheists. The message of Jesus didn’t survive Rome, not without being fundamentally changed at least…
Council of Nicea decreed the “trinity is one”, I believe? As in Yahweh, the holy toast, and Jeebus are all the same?
It became the imperial creed after the Roman pantheon, it had to have some polytheism and manlike deities! More importantly, “believing in Jesus Christ” and not good deeds (faith without works, there’s a whole argument about it in the Bible), became the new stairway to Heaven…
The origin story of the “indulgences”?
Westerns are fucking awesome, pardner
Can’t argue with that!
Is that referring to something specific?
Half of humanity is a lot of people. Does she mean half of americans?
Authoritarianism is on the ascent worldwide…
In person deserves the sensitivity. Online does not.
The problem is the algorithm and its masters, but you aren’t fucking helping.
What do you think is on the other side of the screen?
Usually, a horse. Or an FBI agent.
Where the fuck do you think the problem started???
The Internet would be a better place if you could get popped in the jaw every once in a while for saying stupid shit.
we need less violence in the world not more
Or more violence directed at those who deserve it. Will make things more bearable for a brief moment
😡👊💥
Or, you know, be respectfully told why you’re wrong.
I think many people operate at an extremely basic level of moral reasoning. That is, if they get punished it’s bad otherwise it’s fine.
So if they post something bad and get upvotes and attention, that’s good. That’s it. That’s the extent of the reasoning.
So I do think if some people actually got punished in a meaningful way, they would (to an outside observer) appear to get better.
Hitting people in the face probably isn’t the best way to do it, most of the time. But I don’t think just telling someone “hey, that thing you did was hurtful for x y z”. They’re not listening. They don’t care. Hit them with a ban, maybe.
Some people are capable of more complex reasoning and realize other people have thoughts and feelings, and take that into account. But some people, that’s not their default.
Yup. I am having hard time (decades already) facing this reality. It is ugly as hell (any hell, for that matter)
