Yeah, Romanian is so weird to me as a native Portuguese speaker - there are so many cognates. I am good friends with a Romanian family and when they talk all sorts of words are completely understandable coming from Portuguese…

In order of fluency (for languages spoken, although German was only studied and any fluency has rusted out):

Portuguese: Por Favor/Obrigado

English: Please/Thank you

Spanish: Por Favor/Gracias

Farsi: Lotfan/Merci (plus many more elaborate ways of thanking)

German: Bitte/Danke

For languages I don’t speak at all, but only know because of friends who are native speakers:

French: s’il vous plait/merci

Romanian: Va rog/multumesc

Italian: Per favore/Grazie

You just flipped that whole thing on its head pretty well… And also reminded me of one of two most cringiest times in my life where I misgendered someone. She worked at my local grocery shop and I had known her throughout her transition, but as an immigrant in Texas I was really keen on my “yes Ma’am” and " yes Sir" and I pulled out a “thank you sir” when visiting after a long time and she called me out on it as she should have… I felt like a dick, yet somehow did it again with a student of mine years later. I wish I had my wife’s excuse (she comes from a language that doesn’t have gendered pronouns and goes about her day confusedly dispensing he or shes in a totally random pattern 😂)

As the commenter above you mentioned regarding doctors, I have photos that probably look worse than fun in the bath pictures. As a parent, I have taken at least a handful of close up photos of genitals (and in earlier years, anuses) to show to a doctor with a befuddled and embarrassed tone of “so, is this normal? It looks weird, I was worried!” I mean to delete them, but sometimes I forget until I run into them accidentally much later on. TBH, I wish it was only on my device with no Google photos syncing, but I have also sent those to a friend’s wife who is a pediatrician for a sanity check before I go on wasting a doctor’s appointment over nothing…

I recently volunteered at my kids school and had to take the mandatory reporter training, which taught me that along with teachers, coaches, etc, people working at photo labs are also mandated reporters (in my state in the US), which really drove it home… I can only imagine some poor photo tech at Walmart in the 90s having to deal with finding and reporting child abuse, fuck…

I mean, I have been paying this whole time lol, did I say otherwise? That shit is on autopay. What I do mean is that I haven’t kept up with the constant shifting of rules and programs that start and then get stopped by the courts, etc. I am busy working my ass off, and if last time I had to deal with this is any indication, I have to take the equivalent of a whole day off, do research, spend hours on the phone with the servicer, then do a bunch of paperwork just to ensure I have things the way they are supposed to be (unlike a whole year I was overpaying because I didn’t know about some consolidation process).

These are government loans that are then managed by private companies. Considering I pay not only interest but also taxes, I think is fair to ask that the way it be managed by some better means than some shifty inefficient third party business, that makes me do their job for them just so I can be paying the fair amount I am supposed to, and also get the forgiveness the government promised me for applying my advanced degree to non-profit work for 10 years: that’s not a fucking hand out, it’s a deal the government made with me to satisfy a policy need they had. I am doing my part and making all these payments for a decade, and they’re not exactly doing their best to keep their end of the bargain when you have some byzantine program they outsourced and screws over a bunch of people that have kept up their end of the bargain.

So, get over yourself. I don’t understand what’s your fucking problem here

I hate that, as someone who was truly on top of this 4 years ago and submitting paperwork for public service forgiveness and all, I have no fucking clue as to what is happening now or what’s next. So, as someone who definitely owes money on that, and had a kid right before the pandemic hit, and is desperately adrift keeping shit together, I really hope someone has a great ELI5 coming on this thread lol
