C is definitely still king, but I wonder if crABI will eventually be able to dethrone it:
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/111423
If they can define a useful ABI that manages to include lifetimes, that might just be enough of an improvement to get people to switch over from assuming the C ABI everywhere.
The cool kids are forcing people to read this at gunpoint nowadays

Copying my comment from the cross-post. Anyone here know enough about ActivityPub to know how much work it will be to make it interoperate nicely with Lemmy in addition to Mastodon?
Looks like it’s still a WIP. lemmy.world says that it can’t find the user, but my instance shows his profile:
https://midwest.social/u/[email protected]
If you click on the full username, you get redirect to this page, which is the raw ActivityPub profile:
{ "@context": [ "https://w3id.org/security/v1", "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams", { "toot": "http://joinmastodon.org/ns", "manuallyApprovesFollowers": "as:manuallyApprovesFollowers", "indexable": "toot:indexable" } ], "id": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1", "type": "Person", "following": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1/following", "followers": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1/followers", "inbox": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1/inbox", "outbox": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1/outbox", "preferredUsername": "dansup", "name": "dansup", "summary": "", "url": "https://loops.video/@dansup", "manuallyApprovesFollowers": true, "indexable": false, "published": "2024-06-06T10:30:00+00:00", "publicKey": { "id": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1#main-key", "owner": "https://loops.video/ap/user/1", "publicKeyPem": "-----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY-----\nMIIBIjANBgkqhkiG9w0BAQEFAAOCAQ8AMIIBCgKCAQEA1zzC7XBF81lhJV1o47AA\n9JgguOxygANanxzRUaGOA7BUC9kAWbXI2CoQtzVBTGRiSaiy84d8UgdKQOiAT49m\nmmPdkdnb7zeL7PUKVucv5ppxL5pjXvx11FfYDOIvy52TxjirDIEhvSCiau3BSYf7\nvXtIgsoGnVTkDaStoDauDMfEPGnf6E7eCWHKPOkbeuxF3B3k/Mz2qEmg2MXxegt/\njE4Y75E0BiPs+GeCcYBwri6QddGlQlfveUmj5ZGN2AZGaZdZBNE4FlvJK14GIiTi\n/xT1rYJgwEViFSvGdqXXeRWcWth6UzyzzQrUARLniAf9xcFyYFdx6oJmI3Mu4EWd\nMwIDAQAB\n-----END PUBLIC KEY-----\n" }, "icon": { "type": "Image", "mediaType": "image/jpeg", "url": "https://loopsusercontent.com/avatars/1/v0.jpg" } }Based on the mention of toots and mastodon, I’m guessing he’s focusing on that first. Hopefully interoperability with Lemmy will come quickly though. Being able to embed loops as posts would be really nice.
I bought everyone in my family a drink to get them to use Signal. Worked great and we’re still on it.
Don’t bother trying to sell people on privacy etc, for the most part. Show them Giphy integration, stickers, Stories, etc and show them that it’s fun. Signal has done great work there, in making it “noob-friendly”
My bad on posting the AI mother bird video. In my defense, it was surprisingly lifelike. I’ve gotten better at identifying fakes and more cautious before reposting them from Loops. Hopefully the legit bird loops are appreciated, though, if not I’ll stop crossposting

politics @lemmy.world•Trump’s win has given angry incels enormous power | Arwa Mahdawi
0·1 year agoRemember to direct your anger in the right place:

Their failures gave us Trump and empowered nasty people like this. The entire structure needs replacing ground-up with people that aren’t gobbling corporate cock.
That’s a whole 'nother rabbit hole, that eventually leads to this:

Do you have some more reading about this? The wikipedia article doesn’t really touch on it.
Neat! Do you pick one instance to load comments from? I notice that this comment isn’t showing up immediately, so wondering if there’s federation delay or the like.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Lemmy User Feedback and Improvement Thread: Share Your Complaints, Suggestions, and IdeasEnglish
0·1 year agoIt would be nice if communities that are similar enough could “share” a comment thread, so you don’t end up with comments scattered over many different communities for the same link. The mods could toggle something in the settings and say “This other community is good and we’ll be OK sharing posts with them”. You also wouldn’t have to explicitly crosspost.

0·1 year agoSome apps will collapse those into a single post, but not all of them, and not all the time. It would be nice if that were better.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Lemmy User Feedback and Improvement Thread: Share Your Complaints, Suggestions, and IdeasEnglish
0·1 year agoIt would be nice if there was a way to handle instance/user migrations. If an instance gets their domain name taken away, there’s no way AFAIK for the admin to say “Here’s our new location, with a verifiable signature”. Likewise there’s no way for a user AFAIK to move their account with a verifiable signature that the new one is still them. Ideally this could all happen automatically with signatures getting synced automatically and all that.
I’m sure it would be a lot of work and no idea if ActivityPub would get in the way, but it would give people a lot more assurance that they didn’t pick a server that will screw them over by going down.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Google now requires JavaScriptEnglish
1·1 year agoYeah, it’s not impossible, but it’s much harder and you get a lot less info. You can also counteract the JS-less tracking with Firefox’s privacy.resistFingerprinting, or by using the Tor Browser, which enables a lot of anti-surveillance measures by default. Here’s also another good site for discovering how trackable you are: https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/
