@Thorry84 @semperverus I’m often surprised how behind the times the US is. I mean chequebooks anyone? Card swiping? Overnight payment systems? Feels like a step back to the 90’s

@Thorry84 @semperverus Im just checking . Are you discussing what is basically ASDA shop and go… or the same service with a different name offered by every major UK supermarket ? asda.com/instore/scan-and-go
@Godnroc @Natal Something like this that you could flash a custom ROM on?

@warmaster I was just agreeding and suggesting that their monetisation strategy is licencing hence the reason for improvements for Enterprise clusters rather than focusing on Self Hosting is the money.
@warmaster @Shimitar Their licencing suggests they are targetting larger infra.
@bizdelnick Oh I love Openwrt andnfor router functionality its great. But I am trying to have my cake and eat it by seeing what applications I could also selfhost on the box as well. e.g. anything such as email, file sharing, activitypub server or homeassistant
@poVoq Yeah I was thinking that the overhead of a Hypervisor was a bit much hence something that is a bit more lightweight.
@hendrik I saw some company selling a ‘powerstation’ with a 200w panel for what looked like £1300! Nuts!
@hendrik Aliexpress will have every kind of DC wiring accessory you need for the consumption side, DC-DC converters ( up for battery and laptop charging , and down for USB ) plug and socket adapters.
12v fridges and TVs are a thing now. Most micro form factor PCs have 12 or 19v DC inputs. You can evennrun starlink from DC. 12 Dc Water pumps are cheap even selling small 12/24v Aircon and washing machines. Only thing that really doesnt work is cooking (gas bottle is best)
@hendrik Yup. Just look online for the millions of people who have put together a MPTT charge controller which will do everything with what ever their budget supports, lead acid or the more expensive deep cycle batteries. Good thick cables from panels to controller and battery are important.
We put 1200watts on our bus roof. Spend your money on as many panels as possible and a controller to support them first then add battery capacity as you can afford it if money an issue.
@hendrik What is this Powerbstation thing? Its just solar panels + charge controller + batteries and some cables. If you must get an inverter but use it only when you absolutely must. Much better is Dc to Dc conversion for most electronics.
@rikudou Its open source. The owner will die … the software can live forever.
@KazuchijouNo Just install something like WordPress which generates RSS of posts automatically. Bonus you can add the Activitypub plug in and syndicate your content with Mastodon etc.
@Tugboater203 @throwawayacc0430 It’s just them moving the IP addresses they have around to other parts of their network. Nothing wrong with that. The companies that geocode IP numbers will update their databases eventually.
@Blisterexe Well so many businesses do this because they believe that the vendor will somehow charge less if they can reuse that code… but if its highly customised thats unlikely . it just becomes a case of pushing the costs down the road.
Not many postal banking businesses in the world
@yak So this is an interesting thing. Obviously the functionality required by the #PostOffice is to a degree bespoke - but not considering ownership was a critial failure of the contracting process.
Interestingly I think that there is something that every #creditunion that outsources its #corebanking and other IT should consider - How locked into that offering they are and what happens if they want to change? #Opensource #banking solutions offer the ability to both switch vendors and also customise to their requirements realitively easily - I’m not sure how many use solutions based on #mifos or #fineract - I guess they are still fairly new.
@EarMaster I’m going to say that if you are doing it for wider family that might still be worth it (given that you can get a private stream and your network feed might be more relevant for other family members - But then it is a case of bringing your family along with you… If you are doing other stuff for them (email, file sharing , device management - Then maybe an ActivityPub server becomes a bit of an addon
@Ulrich Ia really think the idea of having a ‘common bond’ is a good idea to stick to. Whether thats ‘my family ’ or ’ members of my sailing club’ or ’ people i went to school with’ Anything beyond that you want some legal structures between you and the users to provide a level of protection
@Thorry84 Yeah … I think their apps even offer it as a feature so you don’t have to pick up the device.
