You are what you do and say.

There are some cool ass, communist old people who will smoke a joint with you and express their shame for being conflated with their lead consuming contemporaries, and then there’s 20 year olds that listen to Ben Shapiro and want to make america great again, lamenting over never experiencing the “good ol days” when minorities had to defer to people who lacked significant melanin and women had to latch onto a man to have any social standing and silently accept whatever that man did to her.

As a rule, people are a product of their cultural upbringing and accept it blindly as the path of least resistance, which is why stereotypes exist. But that’s just a majority within a population, not a universal of a population.

  • And nothing of value was lost.

That’s why the only social I used was reddit and now moved to lemmy. Because I would rather ideas rise and fall on their own merits than by the name recognition of who said them. I value ideas, not personas or brands.

Some idiot celebrity/politician/Capitalist Sociopath says something and it gets seen by millions, not because it was worth seeing, but because a famous person said it.

  • Don’t worry, Mr. Oligarch, the peasants will always be too busy tearing one another down over petty social issues that the economic prison you own causes or exacerbates by design.

Your division propaganda machine is working as intended. Half of the working class is so deluded and confused that they’d take a bullet for a “job creator” like you. In most of this prison camp, saying an unkind word about the owner class will be met with ignorant ridicule and scorn. You’re fine. You got us good.

If you want to worry, worry about the climate change your class caused wiping us all out. You can’t bribe, divide, trick, or bargain with that.

  • It’s a numbers thing and it’s why empathy tends to diminish as population swells.

Here it feels like community, like one’s opinion is appreciated. Reddit became a place to hope you get acknowledged at all, where swaths of the community came solely waiting to shout others down and win a fight.

Unfortunately, for all of Reddit’s faults, that wasn’t a reddit thing, that was just a glaring, crippling defect inherent to humanity. As numbers increase here, that old familiar reddit apathy and antagonism will return. Just play the game of what would you be willing to do, not just rhetoric, for a random person in your circle of friends vs someone from your town/city vs the world. Psychologists call it psychic numbing.

  • I will speak of the dead how they were, not how I wish they were, and especially not how the dead wish they were spoke of if it has no basis in how they conducted themselves in life.

It devalues people that lived empathetic, caring lives, it devalues the lives of people who struggled their entire life but never used that as an excuse to exploit or otherwise harm others to play pretend some greedy/malicious/antisocial garbage human was a “great guy.”

Don’t speak ill of the dead? It’s nonsensical. There is no God, but judgment still should come for a person, by the people whose lives they touched for better or worse, and it helps no one to pretend everyone who died was awesome.

Maybe if the world called a notorious POS a notorious POS when they died and tossed their corpse into a dumpster, it would, I don’t know, show the living that how they live will decide how and if they’re remembered.

  • We’re all going to be foolish from time to time in life, and I sure know I’d sincerely appreciate a kind hand when it’s my turn.

It depends on your net worth. I see Americans wish death on homeless people for lowering property values and insisting they did it to themselves. I see Americans telling student loan debtors who committed the crime of buying the lie and improving themselves being laughed at for their struggles.

Meanwhile a wealthy person can go to a fancy rehab for years of acting like a belligerent, intoxicated asshole, be called brave for it, and have their job with massive salary waiting for them after it all.

Second chances (and third, and fourth…) are for capital holders. Poor people half to walk a tightrope from birth and be both lucky and perfect to improve their station, with plenty of people ready to scold them for trying the moment they fall.

  • These people have already consumed more resources than most people would in 20 lifetimes. They are one of the owners of the capitalist exploitation machine.

I know they have people tripping over themselves to save them from their own extreme tourism misadventure because money, but for me at least, it’s depressing as fuck to watch so many regular people, the peasants our global oligarchs oppress, sitting on the edge of their seat rooting for them while not giving a shit about the millions dying of exposure and police harassment in tent cities for the crime of not being good enough capitalists.

Sure, save them if feasable, but I wish the people the billionaires exploited and tossed aside that correctly lose hope and wait under a bridge to die for lack of options got even a tiny fraction of this attention, let alone assistance. Some peasants literally wish death on those struggling people for hurting their property values with their continued existence.

  • I totally agree. Voyager is what got me really into Trek. It really set the tone that it’s easy/easier to live by the high minded, aspirational values of the federation when resources are abundant to infinite, but Voyager showed us that those values just as important if not moreso in the darkness.

And let’s be honest, Sisko didn’t really even seem to subscribe to those values, so DS9 wasn’t similar in that regard.
