JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.

It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.

I’m surprised Trump’s even fine with hosting the world cup in the first place seeing as every professional footballer is a migrant by definition.

it is a money maker considering they don’t need to build new stadium or infrastructure. However these things doesn’t mean much, I think what he cares about how the final draw up to 1.5 billion viewer… so if he get to be there handing gold medals or something he will be happy.

That’s completely irrelevant, a migrant is someone who relocates for work-related purposes, 99.9% of football players are doing so, that’s the whole backbone of football, not including Sunday league players.

Yeah, true that. I misunderstood your original comment as implying that American players weren’t good enough to be professional!

And yeah, sports like this really do show how open most of the world is to migration, even if only of skilled workers. Vance’s ‘joke’ is a sign of how America is turning away even from that and becoming more insular. There are both positive and negative aspects to globalisation but I’m thinking that locking the doors, drawing the curtains, and gripping a gun is not a healthy response.

I’ve been to over 50 countries in all seven continents, and I’ve lived in four of those. Never did I feel anything that I would would describe as fear.

I will be travelling to the US for an exchange program next month. I am afraid. To the point I am actually considering cancelling what could be a career changing opportunity.

I would consider canceling any dealings with US if said person isn’t white, even that is a stretch for this dogshit administration. I hope we see a general protest by making the World Cup barren.

As a sane person I am deeply sorry for any strife our government causes. Do your best to stay safe!

Generally speaking, opportunities are difficult to find and if you let go of one, depending on what kind of opportunity it is, you might get another one in a few years, or decades, or never. Depending on what line of work you’re in, European opportunities aren’t comparable to American ones either. Tech industry in Europe is in a laughable state, for an example.

I am in the US, and I despise what’s going on. So please do not take what I am about to say as a defense to what is happening here.

Things are pretty extreme right now, but they aren’t as bad as the extreme left media is making it out to be. I find news articles posted on Lemmy are often sensationalized. There are 100% things we need to worry about, and things I myself am fighting (most everything the orange man does). But I do not think it is so bad you should cancel a big opportunity for yourself. Obviously things are happening to people, but most people are traveling to and from the US without any issues. You aren’t going to hear reports about all the people who didn’t have any issues while traveling.

I do not think there is reason to believe anything would happen to you. The right doesn’t want you here, so they absolutely aren’t going to keep you here as a prisoner. If they wanted you out, you would gladly leave on your own accord and cover all the expenses. They wouldn’t spend more money making you leave if you don’t want to be here anyway.

Even the fucking Nazis made sure Germany was as hospitable as possible to all visitors in the 1936 Olympics. The blatant Nazi propaganda, however, backfired and many people left with a sour taste in their mouths after the event.

Ha ha, yes, such a joker that JD. Totally not a cowardly sleazebeg acting as a “good person” and testing the waters on controversial stuff like a certain orange president likes to do… He’s learning well.

I really hope this is the World Cup with the least international attendance in recent memory (should really be 0, but that’s sadly too unrealistic) . Don’t spend your money in the US, if FIFA wants your fan money they should relocate the world cup to somewhere without threats.

How funny will it be when all of the seats are empty? Americans don’t care about soccer, this event will be funded by tourism and now those folks will be opting out. If I were planning this event I’d be livid. Vance, shut your stupid fucking mouth and never speak again as long as you live.

They’ll just say the stadium was full, it was the FIFA with the highest ratings some people say. A great, big, beautiful FIFA. You know they know a lot about FIFA and some say that will be the best one. FIFA guys, coming up to him crying, saying ‘oh thank you Mr. President. FIFA was nothing before you got here and now everyone’s talking about it.’ People didn’t know what FIFA was before the president. It’s true until he started talking about it no one knew what FIFA was. That’s because he’s the best a FIFA. In all the world no one is better at FIFA than America and the President. /S

Ticket sales are already going so badly that they’re CHEAPER on the secondhand market! Scalpers are taking a loss to get rid of them, which is pretty much unheard of for an event like a world cup.

People are even more wary of traveling to Trump’s US than to the Emir’s Qatar or Putin’s Russia.

It doesn’t have to be profitable for the “city” that’s socialized cost. It just needs to be profitable for capital.

How does the world cup define losing money? Because the absolute devastation that the world cup leaves in it’s wake to already poor and impoverished populations is definitely not being calculated. The human cost of labor exploitation alone is awful. But I guess that’s what they mean by “profitable” anyway.

That’s for host countries that have to build stadiums. WC2026 is going to use existing stadiums in the US, Canada and Mexico, just like WC1994 the last time in the US. Not every WC is like Qatar that had to build all new stadiums for all the venues. It’s always preferable that a host country already has capable stadiums like WC2014 in Brazil or WC2006 in Germany.

Genuine question, don’t almost all countries lose money when they host the World Cup?

FIFA literally keeps all ticket sales and broadcasting money. Your only hope is to entice more visitors in the future or be an European country that already has stadiums literally everywhere.

No, they don’t. A lot of money is generated from the attendance via hotel bookings, restaurant meals, alcohol sales, day excursions, VAT taxes, etc. For the tourism industry it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

    Dear Foreigner,

If you are coming to the US for the world cup you are fucking stupid. You’re going to spend thousands of your preferred currency to get harassed by Customs and if you fuck up and get arrested for whatever little thing the police that stops you has up his ass that day you run the risk of ending up in South America or Africa but not the part you are from, in a jail somewhere getting fucked.

Unless you are white, if you’re white come on over, have a beer. Remember, though, even if you are Spanish, Italian, Greek, or any of those other darkies you gay commie Europeans call white, you are going to get lumped in with the Mexicans, especially if you speak Mexican or eye tie.

    Fuck you, countries full,
