Noclip has made a great documentary about Dwarf Fortress and it’s creators! Can recommend it, even if you haven’t played it.
A great documentary series. It’s four glorious episodes long!

I fucking teared up when Tarn smiled and showed the camera his secret in the final episode.
They’re all such sweet and genuine people who deserve to be happy.
IIRC, the creator’s medical bills were the motivator for bringing it to Steam with graphics upgrades. I’m glad to see he’s finding success here.
Fantastic news! I’m so happy they felt impetus to include the less ASCII loving fellow humans in their beautiful game, I tried it a couple times earlier but with too much frustration. The vanilla steambuild changed all that, and at warp 9 as well. Wat a great game, really happy for the developers and publisher.
It’s a shame they changed the UX so much. I love DF and was excited for the steam release, but after realizing you couldn’t play keyboard only anymore, I decided not to buy and just keep playing v47.05.
Hopefully they’ll add keyboard only support sometime in the future, although I know I’m in the minority and most people don’t care or even prefer the new controls.
Nah, I agree 100%. I couldn’t get into DF after those UI changes. Doing anything felt to awkward and slow because I had to keep switching to the mouse.
I think they are still maintaining both versions, at least for now.
They still have the free version (without the steam graphics), but it got the same UI changes, so it also needs mouse unfortunately.
I made the adjustment, but it hurt. I’m still slower at things than I used to be.
Yep. I remembering hearing they were going to try to get it back to where you could use keyboard only (though the binds would likely change), but I don’t know if that’s still the plan. The mouse option is great to have for users who refuse to learn keyboard (or just haven’t yet), but it’s so much slower, and it also limits what the macro tool can do.
I remember trying the original and bouncing off on the steep learning curve. Might just give the new one a go.
I bought it a few months back. Very fun, but the UI and general tutorial needs a lot of work as they are quite sparse. IMO.
As a new player I found it incredibly frustrating being left to figure out a bunch of stuff on my own. I ended up not playing it because I was struggling with stuff (like the waterwheels, and some other stuff, I forget) it really felt like a life commitment to just play DF.
It’s a good game but BOY has it been tough to figure out.
Think that is by design tbh.
Agree entirely, solving the problems yourself is what makes the game imo.
