Hi all, I’m about to visit Mexico for 3 weeks. Currently in my country, I can download torrents and other stuff without VPN. Is it the same over there as well? I’d be using Wi-Fi over there.

Here’s a travel tip: don’t do dumb shit while you’re in a foreign country and don’t take advice from the internet.
Can you really not go without torrenting for 3 weeks?Those 3 weeks might get extended. Also, some shows’ episodes and movies are going to release as torrents in April.
Why don’t you access your home computer over VPN from Mexico, manage your transfers on that machine per usual, and just pull whatever you need in Mexico directly from your home machine via your VPN? That way you can continue to torrent and seed without burdening someone else’s connection.
I’m going to take my laptop over there. Anyway, I’d go with a paid VPN for an additional peace of mind.

You can also “simply” raw-dog Wireguard. It’s built into the Linux kernel, so you barely have to install anything besides the userspace tools.
Basically, I objected to being reliant on the generosity of a for-profit company. “We do these things not because they are easy, but because we thought they would be easy.”
This is a rough sketch:
- Create a Linux server. It can even be a VM/container if you get the networking right.
- Create a Wireguard interface and pick a private IP address subnet that won’t conflict with your home subnet: https://www.wireguard.com/quickstart/
- Define PostUp and PostDown rules in your Wireguard config that modify iptables to masquerade traffic from the Wireguard subnet
- Also set net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 with sysctl. (There is probably an IPv6 equivalent but I live in the past.)
- Generate keypairs and configs for each device you want to use
- Set up dynamic DNS, e.g. https://freedns.afraid.org/
- Forward UDP port 51820 to your server
- Install the Wireguard app on your client devices. If Linux, you can just write a client config containing the necessary magic words and start it up with
wg-quick.
Boom. Tailscale’d.
I’m sure I’ve forgotten some steps. I have some janky automation that’s broken in a new way every time I try to use it.

Also a bit annoying to set up in Russia, it works just fine, but the windows installer crashes trying to get an up to date version because of error 451. On iOS if you downloaded it before then it works (you redownload from the purchases page), have not tried on Linux yet
Just install a VPN server on your computer or router. That’s all you need unless you’re stuck on CGNAT.
AFAIK South America (at least on Chile) doesn’t even care about how people use the internet, so you can pirate anything you want. I suppose is almost the same for Mexico, they have more important things to care about.
Same thing in Colombia. Something I really like about living here.

Be careful with the food, as a foreigner trying spicy mexican food might give you “Moctezuma’s revenge” (the runs) keep a peptobismol bottle at arms lenght. Also, if you’re american stay away from tap water, we don’t drink that, we drink water from “garrafón” (big water bottle).
Micheladas are pretty good if you’re into beer and interesting flavours. Also try rusas with sprite (or any lime-flavoured soda). If you’re going to Guadalajara please try “carnes en su jugo” and “tortas ahogadas”, if you’re going near the coast, “ceviche” is incredibly delicious. Lime (“limón”) is the key to most mexican food and it’s sour but incredibly good and you’ll find it everywhere. The limes from “taquerías” however, are dry af. My safe food is “enchiladas Suizas”, and you might find them in any and most restaurants (they’re not actually from Switzerland)

I wouldn’t worry about it too much in Mexico—I go there all the time and find them to be reasonable about law enforcement. They have bigger fish to fry than pirates. Enjoy the great food and cool street performers—it is an amazing country that is massively misrepresented in a lot of the world.
That said—get a VPN. It’s a good idea in general.
Yeah my VPN (Mullvad) is super affordable and I just leave it on all the time so I never have to worry.
Also maybe a seedbox could work for this sort of situation? I’m not overly familiar with them but I assume that would also just be running no matter where OP is.
Yep, a seedbox is also a great solution. VPN’s and seedboxes are like airbags—you probably don’t need them most of the time, but you will be very glad you had them when you do.
Well you probably won’t instantly get your door kicked in, but I wouldn’t torrent on someone else’s connection.

Two decades torrenting in Mexico (also periods of eMule and Soulseek), never a problem. No VPN, no seedbox, no Tailscale.

Just get a vpn to be safe. They are so cheap. I live in a country where no one cares about it, but I still use a vpn to be safe.
Also consider that people might not care now, but in the future, the rules might change and there might be a record that you torrented.
