Lemmy.ml is the original instance and the dev instance. I joined it because there was literally no alternative at the time. It’s pretty annoying being called a tankie left and right because of this

If someone’s identity is based on hating tankies, then they’re mostly likely right-wing (aka liberal).

I don’t like tankies either but they’re just more right-wingers to me. Just the alt-imperial version of liberals. That’s why libs get so mad.

I mean you say that, but it’s not like every community on .ml is focused on politics man. Their largest communities are mostly about tech. And they have a pretty cool, albeit somewhat inactive datahoarders community, of whom I think some are helping with redundant archival of datasets being erased by Trump’s administration.

Edit Addendum: For anyone who has the storage space, I would consider helping out with the effort.

Tankies say that shit but they don’t mean it. They could easily support and promote socialism in Western Nations but they don’t, instead the promote people like Donald Trump and try to convince people to resort to violence to tear it all down.

To them, real socialism is the enemy. “Communism” just means Eastern Power and “Capitalism” just means Western Power, it’s political tribalism at its core.

This seems like an odd message considering that Lemmy, as software, is being praised here; and what is being criticized are instances wherein the admins enforce apologism for authoritarian regimes.

I think Beehaw isn’t on the good list here because the account that shared the meme is on Lemmy World which isn’t federated with Beehaw.

So it’s a lack of knowledge of the users that left it off not any nefarious intent.

        But that’s my 2 cents.

They really are a community of nice people trying to protect their peace, as far as I’ve seen. They just defederated from instances with open registration due to influx of trolls, and a lot of users from those groups got offended over it. It was minor drama, but nothing offensive. It’s a bit sad that they’re still being vilified over it.

Beehaw is like the Elks Lodge of the Lemmyverse. From the outside they look exclusive, mysterious, and enticing. Inside, there’s just a few drunk guys singing karaoke.

At least that’s my assumption. They wouldn’t let me in because I refused to write a paragraph about why I wanted to join an instance that I knew virtually nothing about. Even the Elks Lodge wasn’t that picky.

And yet, on other Lemmy instances like world, people will fight to the bitter end defending Joe Biden’s policy of enabling Israel. And if you dare suggest Kamala Harris was also going to keep supporting Israel, you’ll be crucified lmao.

Nah, fuck Biden’s and Harris’s handling of the situation. It was a disaster and needs to be called what it is.

But I think what you are suggesting is a disingenuous interpretation of what most people were saying during the US election. No one was suggesting that Biden/Harris were good for Palestine. Only that Trump would be much, much worse. And I feel like the events of the past few weeks have validated that fear, however horrifying that is to type out.

Ah yes. Feel smug about your moral victory of refusing to vote for Harris while Trump glasses Gaza and throws people into concentration camps at home.

I hate what has been and is happening to the Palestinians. But as a member of a targeted group I do not have any energy left to try any help them while trying to get myself and my friends to safty. As I tried to tell idiots would happen.

Also, Harris could have been swayed by public opinion. Trump cannot.

If Harris was gonna be swayed by public opinion, it would have happened after the massive protest vote in Michigan. It didn’t. It could have happened after polling showed how incredibly unpopular her Gaza policy was with her party base. It didn’t. And it didn’t change when she actually needed votes, it’s safe to say it never would have changed.

If Harris has been elected, a huge number of Democrats would be more than happy to sweep current events in Gaza under the rug, because now our person is in charge, and they can do no wrong.

Stop with your moral grandstanding. Harm reduction is a thing. Both are bad options, but even assuming she wouldn’t have been swayed things would still have been better than they are now. You can do your protest vote in the primary if you want, but those short-sighted actions in the general is how fascism has won.

Regardless, it really just feels like you decided to fuck over minority groups in the US while also making things worse for the Palestinians. Trump is gearing up to start WW3 and the only reason I think they aren’t going to nuke Gaza is because they want the land. Not that conventional weapons can’t do the same amount of damage.

Meanwhile, you throw women, immigrants, and trans people under the bus because you wanted to feel smug about something. Between wondering if I will be able to maintain rights, or even life, in the next 4 years on top of them literally tearing the government apart and doing damage that will take decades to fix, if it even can be fixed, I don’t see things getting back to even how they were a year ago in my lifetime, even if I manage to get to an old age.

I can only do what I can, and I can’t fight for people in another country when I’m worried about what is happening domestically. My focus has to be making sure my friends and I are safe. I am exhausted and have no energy left to spare for the Palestinians.

I hate that I have to make that decision, but people like you forced it on me. We told all of you this would happen, and you did not care. I can’t help Palestinians if I get arrested for existing or just murdered in the street.

They want to classify all trans people as porn, just for existing in public, and then execute “pornographers”, which will largely just be queer people they just arbitrarily classified as porn. It’s literally what the Nazis did.

So I really have no sympathy left. Honestly, I’m pretty sure much of the people who refused to vote over Gaza likely just fell for a right wing campaign to split the left. If so, it worked and you fell for it. The people who aren’t Trump supporters and didn’t vote for Harris are short sighted fucking idiots.

I have no more energy to coddle people like you and if me calling you out for stupidity for letting fascism win “pushes” you to the far right, then you never actually had any principals.

            1. There’s a big difference between ‘there’s Nazis in our military’ vs ‘our government is erecting monuments of Nazis.’
            2. It’s not even ‘almost a genocide.’ The US officials are trying to save face. The CIA and State Dept were training Uyghur extremists to destabilize the region, and they’re pissed China put a stop to it, and started rehabilitating the militants.

This strikes me as much of the root of the problem here, of why immature and uneducated people are drawn to fascism. You all treat it like team sports.

You really can’t even imagine opposing Russia while also opposing Nazis. Or you’re just a Nazi looking to groom people into the ideology with Russiaphobia.

I’m a Finnish person with detailed understanding of Russia.

We literally fought Nazis and Russia, both.

I constantly criticise the US for it’s growing fascism. I also heavily criticise my own country for its authoritarian tendencies. See unlike you, I don’t have a preferred flavour when it comes to injustice. I’m disgusted by it all.

So your attempt at generalising is really ironic here. You are literally doing what you blame “others” for doing “treating it like team sports”. But you can’t accept a single criticism of Russia. And would NEVER admit to the WELL DOCUMENTED war crimes they’ve pulled during their ILLEGAL INVASION of a sovereign country with some ridiculous excuse of “we are invading them to save them from Nazism and install our dear leader”.

                  “ideology of Russiaphobia”

First of, it’s “russophobia”. Secondly, no, pointing out facts about Russia, like their endless amount of war crimes isn’t any sort of discrimination, вахтера.

      Earnest response:

      spoiler

I was in middle school, just gaining political awareness at the time of the nato intervention in yugoslavia. I was in the US for that experience. The difference between what was said about the bombing campaign inside the US vs what I heard from my family outside made it clear to me that there’s always two narratives at play. When 9/11 happened I was made extremely uncomfortable by the open jingoism, then with Iraq I was primed to distrust the WMD line. I got involved in anti-war protests, then I quickly became aware that democrats were not faithful opposition when it came to war. The Kerry campaign pitch was essentially just to run the war better than bush was. When I wrote my democratic senator/reps expressing opposition to the war I got boilerplate responses.

I pretty much only hung out with the punks and theater kids through high school because being opposed to the war would get most anyone else to respond with ‘what are you a terrorist?’ I was reading political theory at this point, but legitimately found it hard to engage with marx or lenin at the time because it was the end of history and all I could really see was that avenue being closed off entirely. I’d get lots of exposure to that sort of politics from listening to my grandfather rant though. While I wasn’t really drawn to organizing at the time I was perfectly happy to go onto conservative forums and rile up/dunk on the fox news watchers.

What I did develop at a young age was a really critical eye for the media, it was jarring whenever I would travel to visit family, leaving America really felt like leaving a bubble. Not just leaving the rat race, but for example when not visiting touristy areas, if I was speaking in English I’d get people being like “oh you’re American? why are so many people in prison there?”. I still remember as a kid trying to wrap my head around just why so many people were in jail, the result was a deep disappointment in the US, and any politician upholding ‘norms’.

At the same time as being totally disenchanted with the US I realized that I still needed to survive somehow, and living in the US gave me better options than anywhere else so I opted to stay. I knew I was trans at this point, not that I really had the words to properly describe the feeling, though I also felt that pretty much everyone I would interact with would be hostile to me if I expressed them, which made me avoid discussing it at all. I did know that I couldn’t afford a prolonged encounter with the American medical system. I also hated the prospect of having to be the sickest patient in the mental ward just to be able to get medical support. I concluded that it just wasn’t to be and instead I opted to repress and went to college. My degree selection based on a cold calculation of what degree that I could stand would make good money and graduated in time for '08 financial collapse. Putting off transition felt like a wise move as I then needed to move back in with my parents while looking for work.

I remember being actually hopeful that something might change after that and the occupy protests, only to be monumentally disappointed by Obama.

I was actually hopeful for Bernie too, it was nice to see what looked like the pendulum swinging left for a change. To then have whatever youthful energy there was so callously shut down to prop up the old guard democrat fossils really made it clear to me what side they were on. COVID also got me to to re-evaluate my life and political commitments. Organizing with my local anarchists was great for connecting with other trans people who were also COVID-concious, many of whom would probably also be considered tankies by lemmy users at this point. It also motivated me to read more theory, anarchist and marxist. Parenti was actually a great entrypoint for me on the marxist side, while Graeber was my original favorite on the anarchist side. I opted to start transitioning late in life when I finally had both financial independence and the social supports.

COVID also made it really clear to me that I couldn’t count on the democrats being honest about something if they saw a political advantage in lying, that they would tolerate the final solution if it was on a long enough timescale. Gaza confirmed that realization. I could talk your ear off about that in greater detail, but this isn’t the place for that.

I went on reddit for easy dopamine hits pretty much since the digg migration, but after october 7 I just kept getting banned repeatedly and that motivated me to finally move over to lemmy.ml and I’ve been here since. catgirl-peace

Just reading and watching the situation unfold. Whereas I can’t understand why someone is ok with the US lifting a ban on arming Nazis, and somehow I’m the asshole for just being aware of that.

You also get called a tankie on here for just pointing out that most of the Tiananmen Square claims have been debunked. Somehow I’m also an asshole for knowing the western media outlets did not claim violence from the CCP at the time, but changed the story in coordination with US intelligence. How am I in any way in the wrong just for knowing about US intelligence changing the narrative, and not going along with it? I didn’t fabricate these fucking news archives. Take it up with the Washington Post.

All of the tankie accusations amount to ‘how dare you know about that?!!’ or ‘they’re the good kind of Nazis!’

What’s your point here? Are you automatically assuming that only because I’m against China, NK and Russia (mainly because the latter would gladly bomb my home any given moment and the former two would hand over weapons), I somehow think America is an angel that hasn’t been violating human rights since forever?

Oh hey this looks familiar LMAO

Before the tankies come in here

Their calls of unity and accusations of division are false, they’re Authoritarian “leftists” who deny anything bad of the CCP, Russia and NK from human rights violations to genocides and any evidence of said acts is nothing but “CIA/Western propaganda”

Tankies are not socialists, they’re not communists, they’re authoritarians, full stop.

Denying propaganda the CIA is selling you about China is not the same thing as denying everything the CCP has ever done wrong. Especially when even the CIA has backtracked their claims, and you religiously stick to it.
