      Check out “Aquaria”. Not quite the same thing, but a Metroidvania playing as a mermaid with song powers. Lots of boss fights! And you can even breech the surface when you get there!

    Great list. Donkey Kong Country is especially appealing for me. Let’s throw mario in there too while we’re at it. I think that could work well.

    I’d like to see a red dead redemption set in the early wild west.

      I guess Sonic Adventure 1 has a little bit of this, with the hub worlds. New abilities can allow you to reach new places in the hub worlds

        Sonic Adventure 1 is my favorite Sonic game. I was thinking more along the lines of a 2d sidescrolling Sonic metroidvania though.
