My partner and I are doing some traveling and dispersed camping in some fairly remote locations. We listen to audiobooks quit a bit and on one of our legs we listened to The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher and it was so perfectly creepy and we want more of it. The combination of the wooded setting, and psychological type horror that was more creepy than graphic really made the week after listening to it kinda terrifying. We’ve read Pet Sematary previously and it also really hit the right notes and would have been a great read deep in the trees.
We read Salems Lot and What Moves the Dead and while we enjoyed them, they did not hit the same spot. Vampires aren’t creepy in the right way and neither was What Moves the Dead. Horror isn’t our normal genre and we don’t know where to go from here. We’d really appreciate some some reccomendations
The Colour out of Space
By H. P. Lovecraft
this is my favorite Lovecraft piece. phenomenonal concept, and I think it was when he was getting to transition away from commercial magazine writing so the structure was getting better than in previous stories.
I know this is a book community but it’s worth mentioning this also had the only movie adaptations I stand by
I’m not sure if these are quite the same sort of thing you’re looking for, I haven’t read any of the examples you provided to compare, but two podcasts that are personal horror favorites of mine and kind of feel like they might sort of rub up against what you’re looking for- Old Gods of Appalachia, and Alice Isn’t Dead
You are the first person I’ve seen in the wild to recommend OGoA. This makes me so happy!! I stumbled upon them via Kickstarter when they did their TTRPG and found out the writers are from 2 towns where I have also lived.
You might like a horror podcast:

“The Only Good Indians” by Stephen Graham Jones. Watch out for deer. You never know.
I don’t like when I’m hiking and they stare me down as I walk by. I’ll add this to my list thanks
- The Indian Lake trilogy is slasher series set in remote Idaho
- Beware the Woman is a claustrophobic thriller set in a cabin in rural Michigan
- Mister Magic is a modern retelling of IT (loosely) set mostly in the basement of an abandoned house
- The Terror (Dan Simmons) is about a supernatural entity assailing a group of marooned sailors in northern Canada. Based on a real event and later adapted into a pretty good TV series
Thank you these all sound fantastic!
