I have a theory that animals perceive fear and anger as the same emotion. Since with most animals whenever they get scared they lash out and attack things.
So they see you scared and react so you dont attack them. Its just unfortunate for them since we can remember and retaliate.
I don’t think they are the same, but I do know they perceive fear as a threat for the reason you laid out. They may react to them the same way, but even then they seem to have limits on that.
I have an uncontrollable fear reaction around wasps, they sense it, they get scared and then defensive, it’s a nice vicious cycle.
