I don’t get what kind of communities and posts y’all are hanging out in where people talk shit and start shit 🥴
I’ve mostly only had proper interactions with folks here. Some miniscule percentage of rude assholes who are looking for a reaction, but other than that, much smoother than Reddit ever was.
Much rarer in my experience also. I am much more at peace here, and find myself much less inclined to frantically refresh my inbox when having conversations here.
Notifications here make me excited in a good way, rather than raise my blood pressure like they did on Reddit.
It’s always the stupidest shit for me, tbh… Like yesterday there was a post of an (obviously fake) tweet from Dave Ramsey (a “Christian” ~~financial consultant/planner ~~ grifter) that said ‘fuck your 401k, go buy that truck you want now’ or something to that effect, which led to a few conversations in the comments that revolved around what was essentially the cost effectiveness of actually following the (clearly horrible) tweet’s advice.
This one dude makes a comment in which he basically says “no, that makes sense. Used car values are on a bell curve and will sell for more than what you purchased it for 30 years ago at around the same rate of return youd get from an index fund” in not so many words. Now, I’m not in financing (or cars tbh), and tbf I do a pretty heroic amount of drugs generally speaking, but I’m almost certain that that’s not how ANY of that works… lol So i made a little comment politely saying so, laying out my logic for my position, and making sure to explicitly state that I’d be more than open to being proven wrong, but I wanna see some proof, which I didnt think was too awfully crazy or anything until dude replied shortly after babbling that I just needed to look it up, and something about hilux(?); I dunno, just being kind of a prick, demanding I find his proof for him, and then complaining about me (or people on lemmy in general, maybe?) cant take jokes so seriously. Big ‘do your own research’, MAGA, ‘it WaZ A PraNK bRo’ energy.
I can link it if anyone is having SRD withdrawls or something lol
Maybe I just come across really aggressively or something and I’m completely oblivious to it, somehow? 🤷♂️ I dunno… I feel like any time I just try to participate in whatever random conversation I stumble across that interests me on here and have the audacity to disagree even slightly with someone, it’s like they just suddenly go from 0 to absolute fucking bell end instantly.
I am genuinely trying to be as polite as possible, tried to demonstrate my willingness to acknowledge being wrong in the face of evidence if given some, and didn’t even call his mom a cunt or anything (as far asI I’m aware lol)… I mean, shit, sometimes I just like playing Devil’s advocate for the hell of it, regardless of whatever my personal feelings regarding “X topic” may be. Maybe that’s why I don’t get the whole sudden aggression when faced with even the smallest hint of dissension at all times!
Had a read, would toss it in the “boats at night” pile. There was a geneal misread of the intended vibe of one another. Everyone came in with their genuine hats but left with something off-brand.
The original post is more of a commentary on the fact that old trucks have value just in being old trucks. Beyond the vintage stuff that all vehicles have there are certain trucks that are reliable easy to fix, easy to get parts for and not 4 wheeled tanks; valuable to someone who actually uses a truck as a daily worker. It’s a thing that is mostly unique to trucks because of their value as a work vehicle. (Sprinter type vans also have a similar type thing now because of the vanlife™ community)
So, if your in the know the comment reads a lot like a conversation about those 40yo washing machines that never die that people talk about. Like, no one is saying a 40yo washer is better but also why are they better? Kinda thing
Your comment seems genuine but feels like you misread that whole meta conversation that was happening. Then instead of them looping you in and saying, “Yo, I’m only being half serious” they instead came with “old trucks hold their value way more then you think, also stop being so serious” which is a little unclear vibe-wise.
So there’s a bit of back and forth where you guys are just not really clicking and then you hit em with the: “I’m not sure if you’re illiterate, struggle with reading comprehension, or are just plain stupid, tbh” but I assume you were done at that point 🤷
Have a read from the start until that comment, and I’m sure you can tell the mood switch you brought to the table with that comment.
I’m not blaming you. Sometimes we read into things. Interpret things that aren’t being said. Maybe that’s what happened to you here. Sometimes it happens.
❤️ I’d go back and apologize to that person, for calling them illiterate and stupid etc.

I have encountered some rage here that reminded me of Reddit but it’s much more rare.

Oh fuck someone identified a tiny flaw in what I said!
Haha exactly sums up the feeling of seeing the (1) next to the message icon. Yuck. Glad to be rid of that feeling.

You were definitely the aggressor in this situation, yes.
This was the instigating comment.
