In my current state and last state it was the same rule, i just double checked: “[the motor vehicle dept] provides this service, which is necessary when a license plate is lost, stolen, damaged, or becomes illegible.” my in laws have plates that are 30+ years old and look fine. Mine are 12 years old and fine except some dents. No salt on the roads though maybe that’s the difference.
