I understand your sentiment, but I offer the counterpoint that we do deserve dogs because we literally made them — not in a top down, designing as if we were God kind of way, but through millennia of living alongside them as companions and partners. The domestication of dogs likely started with a mutually beneficial relationship, in which wolves could benefit from warmth and food whilst living in community with humans, and those humans gained hunting partners who would protect human settlements as their own.

In the wild, apex predators often try to avoid conflict with each other, due to the high likelihood that even if you win the fight, you may come away with significant injuries. Dogs are the culmination of what happens when two apex predators go one step further than that and go “actually, let’s be friends”, and I think that’s really cool.

Went to Puy du Fou in France (English language link) a few weeks ago and saw their Vikings show (among others). It was a lot of stunts and they had a couple stunts where dogs took down the invaders, and it definitely seemed like there were a few wagging tails in there. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were having fun and were happy because they were doing a good job.

That would explain the bizarre “Christian” aspects of two of the shows I saw. My French is good enough for ordinary conversations but I had a bit of a hard time following along with the recorded dialog over the loudspeakers. In the Viking show all hope seemed lost for the villagers when suddenly the pope (?) appeared out of a river and the Vikings were so impressed by this that they immediately stopped their attack and swore off their Norse gods to become Christian. And the Roman arena show had the Gauls fighting for their freedom to be Christian while the Romans tried to force them to worship pagan gods, when I’m pretty sure the history was basically the opposite of that.

I saw afterwards if you downloaded the app you could see synchronized translations in your own language so maybe it would make more sense, but I doubt it.

I’ve read this before. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen more than a few dog attack videos with their tails wagging.

Been chased by a good many dogs delivering newspapers and as a cable guy. Never encountered a mean dog with his tail rotating. The really mean dogs don’t make a sound and just fucking charge. LOL, one had me stuck up a telephone pole like a treed cat. :)
