Despite brief post-election bounce, Trump has struggled throughout term to get majority approval from Black voters

Donald Trump appears to have lost of goodwill he had among Black voters during the 2024 presidential campaign, according to a new poll.

Among African-Americans, 71.5 percent disapprove of Trump’s presidency so far, while just 24.1 percent approve, according to a Decision Desk HQ average of polls current through July 7.

The president hasn’t gotten majority approval from Black voters since the end of his first week back in office, according to the aggregator, but the latest numbers represent a notable increase in discontent, after Trump had a 63.7 percent average disapproval rating among the voting demographic in mid-June.

Black people… Like what the fuck? Trump is like a caricature of a plantation owner. How does he even have 30% approval among block people

One underestimates the power and scope of right-wing propaganda, and especially how it taps into machismo idolization, sadly.

They live in a country where Black people can freely have their faces eaten by leopards just like White people. “I didn’t vote for this” is universal.

He’s also the caricature of the dumb micromanaging boss that rips off his workers, but that’s not a deal-breaker for white folks either; in fact, the majority apparently approve.

Americans are just stupid, and it’s easy to whip us into a moral panic.

I’m having a thought. It’s easy to write them off as stupid, and they may be, but there’s also like… If they have really bad information, the decisions they make given that info as true make more sense. If you really believed that Harris was eating babies, or “she’s a communist that’s going to put the christians in a labor camp”, it would make sense to vote for the “lesser” evil.

Just need to figure out why they believe such falsehoods. it’s probably fox news et al.

In my opinion, stupid is an aggravated form of ignorant; it’s an aggressive, proud refusal to change one’s mind despite having the clear contradictions in their beliefs presented to them.

They believe the falsehoods because it benefits them to do so. Importantly, all of their friends believe it too, so if they stop then they’ll lose their support and social network. It’s the same kind of thought control techniques that cults exploit.

The thing to understand is that people are deeply stupid and revel in their own ignorance.

Black males, like genz and hispanic males and…, mostly just said “I don’t like my life under Biden. We need a change” and voted for “the other guy”. Some were indoctrinated by their right wing (or tankie dumbfuck) influencers. Others just figured they were being cool and “we need to shake things up in DC”.

I don’t think you can explain this behavior as simply stupid and ignorant. There are plenty of stupid and ignorant people who didn’t make the massive mistake of voting for Trump.

I think the most necessary thing needed to vote for Trump is a glaring personality defect. Bigotry is probably the most common. That’s why the Republicans made such a big deal of trans people.

Other personality defects would be having an authoritarian personality, meaning you simply mindlessly obey whoever you see as an authority, like your church leaders. And complete lack of empathy, and extreme selfishness, and narcissism.

People genuinely take pride in not reading articles (or, as is obnoxiously common on lemmy, losing their god damned minds over a paywall). Same with how nobody watches the news and takes pride in “valuing my mental health”

The vast majority of those voters likely only knew about trump from a few clips from his rallies or hearing a “friend” talk about him. They never actually listened to a complete non-sentence or looked at any of the policy stances.

Which, to be clear, is not an excuse. It is an explanation.

The more likely theory is that the billions of dollars spent on propaganda actually worked. Marketing is far more effective than you’d think it should be… The average person is ridiculously gullible.

It’s a tempting theory. There are signs that there was skullduggery in the election, and it’s really easy to believe there’s no way Trump could have actually won. But that idea only partially survives scrutiny.

There are several critical factors I’ll point to. Let’s start with the easiest. Right or wrong, an election is a referendum on the incumbent party. The Democrats did several things that enabled the idea that the GQP would somehow be better to take off. They let prices of food, housing, and energy get out of hand without even the tiniest hint of helping those impacted by that. No pushback against the billionaire class. No sense that they cared. Sure, they reduced the cost of college education by the SAVE plan, but they didn’t push back when SAVE got gutted by the GQP, and even if they had, that only helps the people who went to college, and could easily be spun that the Dems only care for their base. Had there been investigations into the big food corpos, with clear communication what they were doing, maybe the GQP couldn’t have successfully hung the high prices on the Dems, and the Dems MIGHT have won on by helping everyone and not just somebody seen as part of their coalition. And the idea that the Dems don’t work for the common people and really only serve the donor class might not take off, either, driving Dem Voters to stay home or vote Third Party.

The second big thing is Biden DID promise a single term and a handover to a new generation of Democrats, but he did NOTHING to actually support this. Harris was supposed to be the front-runner for the 2024 Nomination? She should have been front and centre, Biden’s attack dog, doing the dirty work that Biden couldn’t do thanks to the fact that there are only 24 hours in the day. He should have treated this as a Lame Duck election from the getgo. When people ask where he is, Harris should have said “Biden’s doing the hard work of undoing the mess we were left by the Trump administration, and hardening the country’s systems against a potential repeat in the future.” What she did do was act like a nobody for the first 3 years, then suddenly, appear waiting to take over, with all his baggage and all her baggage. While I did pick her over this mess, a lot of other people didn’t, and here we are.

And finally, something I alluded to in the first point: A total lack of communication. This is a recurring and persistent problem! Biden and the Democrats let the GQP win the memetic war, like Obama did in 2010 and 2016, and like Clinton did in the 90s. Every time they get in office, they let the GQP set the messaging, and then promptly lose important elections, allowing the GQP to styme or even outright undo what the Dems did.

You can’t just ignore the Dems fault in this. The election may well have been stolen, but if the Dems don’t address the above problems, it’ll just keep happening.
