ONLYOFFICE Documents 9.0 for Android brings text recognition from document photos and screenshots, support of Markdown and ODG, higher DocSpace compatibility.
I’ve been using OnlyOffice on Linux for a while. It’s what LibreOffice could be if Libre’s UI wasn’t a potato. But does anyone know if fears about its ties to Russia are legitimate?
When I looked into it, I didn’t find anything to worry about. Just a lot of fear mongering, because Russia=bad.
Yes, they are legitimate and not just fears. OnlyOffice is produced by a Russian team. They opened an office in Latvia, and in 2023 a holding in Singapore, to circumvent Western measures in boycott of Russia, so they can continue to sell their services.
What’s also weird is that the Russian version of the software package is named after the first Soviet nuclear ICBM and features imagery of that.
Hmm.
Is there much risk, if the source is open, and we build and self-host?
If the maintainers use the codebase for evil, can we fork it and make a librelnlyoffice 2wo?
I definitely haven’t done mega deep dive on OnlyOffice, but I think there’s not much concern about their ties to Russia. I don’t think people have found them phoning home to anything suspicious.

You are most likely fine using the open source version and none of their paid services.
Personally, I want to avoid any association, so I use LibreOffice.
You absolutely can.
Right. The question behind the question: so what’s the problem?
