I took a day trip to Newport Oregon today, but was still in a Ten Forward frame of mind.
I do love some ramming speed
Edit: erased the fragment of visible badge so it’s less obvious I mirrored Riker
So. Like. I love the defiant. It’s one of my favorite fed ships. It’s unabashedly designed for a purpose that Star fleet still does not want to admit they fill the role of.
It’s simple, spartan, and densely packed.
What it is not, however, is built by an engineer.
Any half-decent engineer with access to replicator tech would have designed the ship to at least be able to spit out its own parts.
(And probably, just maybe, to self-repair itself. Possibly using a singularity core for a power source so all it is now is a question of mass.)
Also, can we mention the seatbelts? And surge protection?
Bashir: “Oh look. Seatbelts. It only took them a decade to read my analysis of shipboardninjuries….”
<Sisko Glare>
O’Brien: “look, don’t blame us. Every prototype, seatbelts come standard. But apparently ensigns are less expensive because they remove them to keep the cost down.”
<Sisko’s glare changes to miles>
Bashir: “what?! That’s barbaric!”
O’Brien: “Don’t even get me started on surge protection circuits for the eps conduits!”
Okay, but which Defiant are we comparing this to? NCC-1764, NX-74205, or NX-74205?
NCC1764 was neither particularly tough, nor, uh, particularly little.
Coulda had the most advanced ship in the Terran Empire, but nooo…
Even for it’s time a Conny was very tough.
But a TOS-era ship thrown back to ENT-era? Should e been able to carve straight through any adversaries
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this Bajoran port
Aboard this tough little shipThe mate was a mighty Bajoran,
The skipper bald and sure,
5 bridge crew set sail that day,
For the Dominion war…the Dominion waaaar
The wormhole started getting rough,
Tough little ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Defiant would be lost, the Defiant would be lost.
Who tf is at the helm?
Needs more hos!
Worf, of course.

Sisko: The Defiant was built for one purpose - to fight and defeat the challenge of coming up with interesting stories wedded to a single location.
(I kid! I kid!)
