he White House has backed off plans for a full takeover of the D.C. police force and will allow for the city’s police chief to remain in charge after a judge indicated they would block the move.

President Donald Trump this week invoked emergency powers to take control of the D.C. police department and call in the National Guard to a city that he claimed is overrun by “bloodshed, bedlam and squalor”—a claim that is disputed by experts.

As part of the federal takeover, Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Terrance C. Cole as “Emergency Police Commissioner,” a move that would have given the White House extraordinary powers over policing.

The city’s Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit calling for an emergency restraining order to block the move, accusing the Trump Administration of implementing a “hostile takeover” of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) that would lead to “imminent, irreparable harm”.

“In my nearly three decades in law enforcement, I have never seen a single government action that would cause a greater threat to law and order than this dangerous directive,” Smith wrote in the lawsuit

Judge Ana Reyes said in a Friday hearing that, according to the Home Rule Act, the Department of Justice needed to rewrite the section of the executive order that placed Cole in charge, and that he needed to go through the city’s mayor. Reyes stopped short of issuing a restraining order, but indicated that if the DOJ did not rewrite the section, she would.

“The statute [The Home Rule Act] would have no meaning at all if the president could just say ‘we’re taking over your police department,’” Reyes said.

Everything Trump and Co are doing in DC and LA is just a trial run for Election Day in ‘26 and ‘28. They are 100% going to deploy armed forces to try and keep Trump/GOP in office and the country is just sleepwalking into this like voting is going to solve our problems.

Going to protests. Talking (yelling) with my friends and family about it. Donating to orgs that help marginalized people and others targeted by these fascists. Supporting independent journalists. Taking additional precautions to protect my privacy online. Closed my Meta and Twitter accounts. Making plans in case I need to shelter in place or evacuate my home. Giving every cybertruck I see the finger to remind them they’re not welcome. Stopped shopping at vendors that kissed Trumps ring. Avoiding travel to any Red states to deprive them of the tiniest bit of income.

Every little thing you can do matters but making people aware of this bullshit and organizing locally is the most important.

To be clear, we’re doing the exact same thing here. And I’ve seen a ton of other people doing the same. We’re not all sleepwalking into this, and I don’t expect our media to give an accurate representation of just how many people are.

We’re not doing as bad as people think.

luckily, thanks to the “checks and balances” of our three branch government, he will surely be immediately removed from office for this blatantly illegal move.
i mean, he knew it was illegal, everyone told him it was illegal, and he tried to do it anyways until a judge stopped him.
obviously there will be legal repercussions for such an action.

Any law that is against what Trump wants is undemocratic, because Trump was democratically elected by the people!

Seriously he actually claimed that! As if every other democratic process is void, and only his election counts.
The man is insane, and unfortunately part of it is that he is a malignant narcissist. And it’s only been just over ½ a year, so he is just getting started.

Yes, certainly South Korea isn’t better at this democracy stuff than the beacon on a hill, the world’s melting pot, the home of the free…?

      Right?..

sure it’s just frustrating when we’re all strung out to see “americans need to wake the fuck up” in a thread full of woke Americans talking to other woke Americans.

          I need a break 😔

Add all the people from other countries chiming in as if they live in the US and yeah, it gets tiring fast.

One suggestion: Be sure to cut back discretionary spending especially during the holiday season. The only way dumb people learn is if impacts their wallets or stock.

They didn’t back off. They are now allowed to Federalize the DC police in case of “emergencies.” Regardless when they lose, they still win.

He’s been taking an absolute ass-whooping in polls.

38% approval rating already as of 2-days-ago, and that’s by PEW Research with a sample of 3,554 people.

For comparison, Biden still had 50% aggregate approval at this point in his presidency. Biden ended 1 pt higher than Trump is now, and nearly matches Carter in terms of unpopularity.

He’s in. He doesn’t care about polls now, only how he and his cronies can manipulate the market and enrich themselves.
