In short, having huge numbers of Americans complain to Congress, as with this piece of legislation, can influence laws at the margin.
The rest of the bill is still awful; it imposes new and large taxes on wind and solar while eliminating subsidies for them, funds a the deportation of millions, cuts medicaid sharply (in large part through imposing onerous paperwork on people) and cuts taxes for billionaires while raising them on the poor.
Oh, thank god. More than anything else happening now, selling off our public lands was what I feared most, because it would be irreversible. Everything else from the Trump era, aside from the cruel loss of life, can be undone, rebuilt, and countered with enough hard work and willpower. But not this.

Mormons. Lee is a Mormon. The Mormon church has >$250 billion in its coffers, and Utah is more than 70% public land.
If they forced a public land selloff, the church could buy every acre of it and turn Utah into their own little religious ethnostate.
That’s been a fantasy of theirs since the 1840s

I’m grateful it’s off the table for now. We best keep an eye on this guy though, I’m sure he’s not going to quit trying.
